AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

The Cihongo mask is the masculine version of the Mwana Pwo mask. The stylistic similarities are evident in the treatment of facial features: the large, prominent forehead, open and marked with the Saint Andrew’s cross, ears sometimes adorned with metal hoops, the half-closed eyes and the tear marks, the same shape of the nose, the pointed-tooth mouth highlighted. The Cihongo is the representation of a masculine spirit evoking power and wealth. It is the spirit of a notable person that must bring prosperity to the village and render justice. In the past, only the chief or the chief’s son could wear the Cihongo. These masks are topped with a headdress shaped like a fan, adorned with feathers. The dancer carried rattles to rhythm his dance. His costume consisted of a knitted raffia suit with long sleeves and tights. Over it, a fiber skirt paced his movements. He performed dance tours and, just like the Pwo mask, he thus collected many donations from the villagers.
