Description from the seller
Rare French Art Nouveau Brass Wall Coat Rack with Adjustable Hooks — 1970-1980
An exceptional piece of craftsmanship from France — this imposing wall rack in solid brass combines the elegance of the Art Nouveau tradition with high-quality mechanical ingenuity.
Pieces of this quality and completeness rarely appear on the market.
DESCRIPTION
A monumental wall coat rack fully made in solid brass, characterized by graceful cast brass volute shapes on both sides, a set of parallel round rods serving as a luggage shelf, and a horizontal sliding rail on which five fully adjustable cast brass hooks are mounted.
The hooks can be manually positioned freely across the full width of the rod — a clever and rare mechanical detail that sets this piece apart from ordinary coat racks.
The design clearly references the French tradition of railway and hotel interiors from the Belle Époque and the following decades, carried out by artisans who kept this aesthetic alive well into the twentieth century.
DIMENSIONS
- Width about 74 cm
- Height about 19 cm
- Depth about 33 cm
A fitting size that dominates any entry, hall or library.
CONDITION
Mechanical: 10/10 — near mint
All moving parts function perfectly.
The five hooks glide smoothly along the rod.
No cracks, breaks, or missing parts. Fully complete and 100% original — no replacements, no restorations.
Visual/appearance: 9/10 — beautiful patina
The brass has developed a warm, deep patina that gives the piece character and authenticity.
No deep scratches or damage.
On the sliding rail there are light signs of use — exactly what one would expect from a piece that has seen active use.
This attests to its authenticity.
ORIGIN & PERIOD
France, 1970–1980
The design, casting, and finish are characteristic of the French artisanal brass industry, with roots in the great hoteliers and railway companies of the previous century. Similar pieces originate from Parisian apartments, boutique hotels, and classic French brasseries.
