Description from the seller

Ring Australian Opal / Cabochon / new

In 925. Sterling silver set

Weight: 1.64 g / 8.2 ct

7.1 mm x 5.1 mm

New and unworn

Ring size:

U 54
UK N
US 6.8
FR 14
Inner diameter: 17.2 mm

The opal is a mineral from the mineral class “Oxides and Hydroxides.” As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and typically appears as a massive vein filling or nodular formation.

Opals are processed exclusively into gemstones.

The word Opal was borrowed from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and presumably traces back to upala from Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, the term was used to designate various rocks, while the early Hungarians called opal mines opálbánya.

Opals were already regarded in antiquity as especially valuable gemstones, sometimes even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote about it: “[…] it has its own fire, the fine fire of the carbuncle, it possesses the purple spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald and an utterly incredible mix of light.”
