Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
A large Bronze Age bronze spearhead with a long triangular blade measuring about 40.6 cm in length and 5.3 cm in width, a short flat tang, a prominent midrib with rivet holes, patination and wear typical of age, in good condition with provenance from a private collection and associated London Collection material.
Description from the seller
A large Bronze Age bronze spearhead, featuring a long triangular blade which tapers gently from the slightly upwards-sloping shoulders to a pointed tip. A short, flat tang extends from the bottom of the blade. There is a prominent, flattened midrib, with a pierced hole on its either side at the bottom for a rivet. Remnants of a rivet are stuck in one of the holes. Patination and earthly encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with age such as significant chipping to the edges of the blade, some surface pitting, and scratches.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the Western Asiatic area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Archaeological evidence suggests that the bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
Measurements: (circa) L 40.6cm x W 5.3cm
Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990 - present.
