Description from the seller

Circa 1900, 20x26 cm.
"Vieil arabe", a very beautiful portrait by Albert Jouve (late 19th / early 20th century).
A superb gelatin silver print on baryta paper, toned with gold chloride, in very good condition (corner fold at the top right), loose (not mounted, rare), and with excellent preservation of contrasts, gray tones and levels of detail.
Signed with a wet stamp on the back.

Albert Jouve is among those photographers active in North Africa at the hinge of the 19th and 20th centuries, whose work accompanies the development of tourism and colonial exchanges. Based in Algeria, he produced views of towns, Saharan landscapes and portraits of local “types” intended for a European clientele. Between documentary observation and atmosphere-seeking, Jouve captures a Maghreb that is both everyday and staged, in a sober photograph, attentive to contrasts and lines.

Merits framing.
Low reserve price, not to be missed.

Will be shipped with its sleeve and its neutral-pH cardboard backing (ideal for a collection in good condition).
