Description from the seller

Circa 1900, 22x28 cm.
"Petites dunes à Togghurth", a very beautiful portrait imbued with poetry of a man of the desert and his camel by Alexandre Bougault (late 19th/early 20th century).
Superb gelatin silver print on baryta paper, selenium-toned, in very good condition, loose (not backed, rare), with excellent preservation of contrasts, purple/warm tones and levels of detail.
Signed by a dry stamp at the bottom right.

Having settled in Biskra at the end of the 19th century, Alexandre Bougault opened a workshop there in the heart of an oasis then very frequented by European travelers. He developed a local production mixing portraits, religious figures and scenes of life.
His photographs are distinguished by sober framings, soft light, and meticulous attention to faces, fabrics, and textures, giving his subjects an embodied intensity.

It deserves framing.
A small PR conservatory piece, not to be missed.

Will be shipped with its slipcase and its cardboard support at neutral pH (ideal for a collection in good condition).
