AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Circa 1885. 20x27 cm.
"Geisha", a very beautiful portrait by Adolfo Farsari, one of the pioneering photographers of the Yokohama School.
Excellent vintage albumen print with watercolor retouches, with very good preservation of contrasts, grayscale tones and levels of detail, mounted on a thin cardboard support.

Farsari’s works offer real poetry compared with some later productions of the Yokohama School, notably those of Kusakabe Kimbei. Although already aimed at Western tourist clientele, they retain a restraint and atmosphere that give Japanese scenes and types of the late Meiji era a more measured presence. His production is characterized by staging that is often less crowded, recurring themes around femininity, motherhood, grooming and domesticity, as well as a subtle balance of accessories and settings. The watercolor highlights remain discreet — sometimes visible as slight halos or bleed-through — rather than a systematic and uniform colorization.

A true beauty. Will be shipped with its sleeve and its cardboard backing (ideal for a collection in good condition).
Small conservator’s note, not to be missed.
