AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Lovely portrait of Saint-Germain-des-Prés published in 1950. There was apparently a numbered edition on the same paper; our copy is of the unnumbered variety. There is no jacket. It's unknown to us if it came with one. The book is covered in a glassine cover, but this is probably from a later date.

A fascinating book, illustrated with around 100 b/w images by Doisneau, Dudognon, Pierre Belzeaux and Michel Brodsky. Essays by a/o Sartre and Jean Paulhan. Of particular interest is the section about the Hotel de la Louisiane, which is famous for many different reasons, one being that Cossery was allowed to live there for decades free of charge.

Included also an essay by Adrienne Monnier, Sylvia Beach's partner when they published James Joyce's Ulysses. Also of note a great image of Greta Garbo, who apparently visited the neighbourhood incognito.

Light spotting to the first and last pages. The binding is loose but intact. Highly recommended.
