Sasanian bronze bowl, hemispherical with a rounded base, 14.4 cm wide and 5.2 cm high, decorated interior with an incised line and two concentric circles, patinated with earthy encrustations and wear, featuring a large side hole with stable cracks, acquired from a private collection in 2015 and dating to circa 3rd–7th century AD.
Description from the seller
A finely cast and hammered Sasanian bronze bowl featuring a hemispherical container with a rounded base. Its slightly convex walls slant upwards, leading to a flat rim. The interior is decorated with an incised line, just under the rim of the bowl. Two incised concentric circles decorate the bottom. Both the interior and exterior of the bowl are covered with beautiful patina and some earthy encrustations. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as minor scratches to the surface of both the interior and exterior. A large hole to one side of the bowl, with stable cracks extending from it.
The Sassanians or Sasanians succeeded the Achaemenids, establishing an Empire which, at its peak, expanded from the Euphrates to the Indus Rivers and included modern-day Armenia and Georgia. Sassanian art borrowed from Near Eastern and Greco-Roman traditions, and adapted the significance of these cultures’ iconography to the local repertoire.
Measurements: (circa) W 14.4cm x H 5.2cm
Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection.
