Neo-Assyrian bronze bowl, circa 9th–7th century BC, with a wide open dish, W 19 cm x H 5.7 cm, in good condition, provenance Ex Abelita family collection; acquired in 2015, previously owned from 1980.
Description from the seller
A finely cast and hammered Neo-Assyrian bronze bowl formed as a wide, open dish. The sides slope regularly from a flattened base. The rim is flattened and slightly bevelled, forming a wide mouth. Two very faint concentric circles are incised into the base. Patination, significant earthly encrustations, and signs of wear as consistent with age to the surface, such as chipping to the edges, scratches.
In the Iron Age Mediterranean, handles and footless bronze bowls featuring hemispherical containers and curved profiles were richly ornamented with Greek and Etruscan motifs. However, bronze bowls of this kind originated in the ancient Near East during the Iron Age. Differing from the Greek and Etruscan parallels that were normally used for religious occasions, ancient Near Eastern bronze bowls were used by the elite as a daily luxurious object.
Measurements: (circa) W 19cm x H 5.7cm
Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection.
