Coins, symbols of power - struck in metal. From Emperors to Kings, rulers struck their image and ideals into coins, turning currency into one of history’s most enduring propaganda tools. These small objects passed daily through the hands of ordinary people, spreading messages of authority with every exchange.
Modern silver pendant enclosing an authentic ancient Roman coin. If preferred, the coin can easily be removed.
Coin: silver Hemidrachm of Emperor Hadrian.
Obverse : ΑΥΤΟ ΚΑΙС ΤΡΑΙ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟС СЄΒΑСΤ. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: ЄT Є, Nike advancing right, holding wreath and palm frond.
Diameter pendant: ± 15 mm
Ref: RPC III online 3076
Condition: very fine condition. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
HADRIAN, Roman Emperor from 117-138 AD. He has been described as a 'benevolent dictator' and spent half of his reign abroad. In 122 AD he started the construction of a new wall that would 'separate the barbarians from the Romans' in Britain. Despite the massacre during the second Roman-Jewish war (132-135 AD) he is still considered to be one of the 5 Good Emperors. His reign saw relative peace and his focus was mostly on culture.
NIKE, the Greek goddess of victory embodied triumph in both war and competition. She was often shown with wings, a laurel wreath or a palm branch; symbols of glory and success.
In Roman culture she was worshipped as Victoria, the divine power who granted military success and everlasting fame. Roman generals dedicated temples and altars to her, and her image was a favourite design on coins, celebrating victories across the Roman Empire.
