West Asian gold circular domed appliqué with granulation, circa 1st millennium BC, measuring about 1.6 cm by 0.9 cm and weighing 0.53 g, featuring twisted filigree bands, perforations and a dangling gold chain, from private collection acquired in 2010.
Description from the seller
A fine Western Asiatic gold appliqué with granulated decoration. The appliqué is circular in shape and domed in profile. The top of the dome is decorated with lines of granulation that divide the appliqué into triangular sections, within which a triangular stack of gold granules enrich the appliqué further. Between two bands of twisted filigree, a row of rounded perforations, with each hole surrounded by more bands of twisted filigree, encircles the lower section of the hemispherical appliqué. From one of these perforations, a chain of gold, attached with a loop, dangles from the appliqué. Two suspension loops, one at the top of the appliqué and another in the interior of the dome, have been added for attachment. The appliqué is slightly warped and misshapen due to age. Earthly encrustations and tarnishing to the surface. Signs of wear, such as scratches, cracks, indentations, and chips to the surface.
Many grand civilisations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity is witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold would have been hammered down to a thin layer and manipulated into different shapes. Gold and silver jewellery would have featured gold granules, glass and semi-precious stone inlays and detailed engravings. Very fine granulation along with filigree, were at the centre of Near Eastern and Western Asiatic jewellery production and were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans.
Measurements: (circa) L 1.6cm x W 0.9cm
Weight: 0.53g
Provenance: From an Ex Japanese gentleman's (deceased) private collection, formed 1970s-2010.
Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been dated based on style by the seller . No further tests, such as an analysis of metals(XRF-test) have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece.
