Ancient Egyptian steatite scarab set in a thick gold mount with a torus-shaped terminal, dating to circa 2055–1050 BC, in good condition, perforated for suspension and measuring about 2.0 × 1.4 × 0.8 cm; inscribed on the flat reverse with hieroglyphs.
Description from the seller
An Ancient Egyptian steatite scarab inscribed with hieroglyphs, set in a gold frame. The arched back of the scarab is finely detailed with the head, eyes, and clypeus clearly identifiable. The legs are represented with hatched incisions along the sides of the scarab. The flat reverse features a series of vertically arranged hieroglyphs: the scarab beetle (ḫpr) sign, the gold (nbw) sign and an ankh symbol flanked by two 'nfr' signs. An incised scroll border surrounds the hieroglyphs. Some areas of steatite display the remnants of bright blue glaze. The scarab has been perforated for suspension and is set in a thick gold mount with a torus-shaped terminal on each side surrounding the perforation holes. The top edge of the scarab is chipped with the small fragment held in place by the gold frame. A hairline crack runs down from the chip. The piece is covered in earthly encrustation.
The scarab beetle was an exceedingly popular symbol in the art of Ancient Egypt, thought to represent the sun god, Ra. The Ancient Egyptians believed that the scarab beetle rolling its ball of dung across the desert mirrored the journey of the sun across the sky from day to night. As the beetle laid its eggs within the dung, it became a symbol of rebirth and regeneration.
Measurements: (circa) L 2cm x W 1.4cm x H 0.8cm
Provenance: From an early 20th century Home Counties, UK, collection.
