Hand-painted maiolica plate from Italy (c. 1800–1850), diameter 18.5 cm, in good condition with minor age-related wear, featuring a pastoral central scene and an ornate floral border; the back bears a small glaze flaw and an underglaze blue mark with two crossed letters under a crown.
Description from the seller
Italy, 19th Century
Elegant and refined tin-glazed earthenware plate, hand-painted, produced in the first half of the nineteenth century by an ancient Italian workshop from Castelli d’Abruzzo or Naples, with a pastoral scene at the center and a border richly ornamented with flowers and putti.
The central scene shows a peasant woman milking a cow, accompanied by a male figure playing the flute. The two figures are set in a soft, sunlit hilly landscape among trees and a blue sky. The border is rich with decorative elements—flowers, putti, scrolls and shells—elaborated with vivid colors and enamels. The two putti are modeled in barocchetto style and echo the prototypes of the Grue and Gentili workshops.
On the back the plate shows a small but insignificant glaze loss, as in the attached photo, and the workshop mark, painted in blue under glaze, with two crossed letters (an A with a D ?) surmounted by a crown.
Diameter: 18.5 cm
The plate will be carefully packed and shipped by courier.
