Anthropomorphic Statuette Komtin - Montol - Nigeria
Living on the right bank of the Benue River, the Montol use small statues with spread legs and outstretched hands.
Most of the known Montol statuettes, as well as the masks, are of relatively abstract workmanship. And the rituals attached to them are poorly documented.
It seems that their use is related to therapeutic purposes.
The statues express both power and constraint (facial asymmetry, rough features, expression of suffering in the posture of the arms and legs). Texts adapted, among other things, from the following link
It is the members of the male secret society Komtin (Kwonten among the Goemai) who used them in divination and healing rites.
The symbol of this society is a pair of bush cattle horns, worn
