Description from the seller
This Rwanda Tutsi dance shield captivates with the elegance of its slender silhouette and the restrained sobriety of its palette. Its oval, elongated shape gives the object a clearly defined vertical presence. The symmetrical motifs, traced in earthy red and deep black on a patinated ivory background, compose a rhythmic and harmonious interlacing pattern. The curves cross and respond to each other, creating a visual balance of great finesse. The patinated surface reveals the material and the passage of time, adding a tactile and authentic dimension. The whole combines graphic rigor, suggested movement, and decorative nobility.
Unlike war shields, dance shields are lighter and more richly decorated. They often bear black, red, and white geometric motifs, symbolizing harmony and balance. Worn by the Intore dancers, these shields rhythmically accompany their graceful and powerful movements, embodying both pride, warrior heritage, and the elegance of Tutsi culture.
