Description from the seller
Giorgio Sommer (1834–1914)
Amalfi
Albumen photograph on paper, glued to an equally sized cardboard mount.
Important view of Amalfi by Giorgio Sommer, one of the most celebrated photographers active in Italy in the second half of the 19th century. The image depicts the coastal town from a panoramic sea view, with the houses perched on the rock and their reflections in the still water. The composition is balanced and luminous, with a soft and detailed tonal rendering typical of albumen prints.
Sommer was one of the leading interpreters of Italian vedutismo, particularly known for his images of Southern Italy, Naples, the Amalfi Coast, and archaeological sites. His photographs were destined for the international Grand Tour market.
Technique: albumen print
Support: photograph glued to the original cardboard of the same size
Era: second half of the 19th century
Conditions: good overall condition; slight signs of age consistent with the age of the work (possible light waviness or minimal marginal yellowing).
A work of great historic and connoisseurial appeal, ideal for collectors of 19th-century photography, Italian vedutismo, and Grand Tour imagery.
