Description from the seller
Complete 6-person dinner service produced by Seltmann Weiden Bavaria in the 1970s.
The dinner service offered at auction was made by Seltmann Weiden and decorated with an unusual design that sits halfway between Space Age style and Postmodern design. Likely datable to the mid-1960s, the bold and sharp pattern, with psychedelic twists and pop colors, is typical of those years and very widespread in the Central European area.
One of the leading figures in the design story of this historical period is Hans Theo Baumann (1924-2016), a visionary freelance designer, who from 1954 designed porcelain objects for more than fifty German manufacturers, revolutionizing the language and style of German dinnerware porcelain. Baumann brought Op Art-inspired designs to plates and vases, speaking a new visual language, highly valued for its vibrant colors. Many Bavarian manufacturers turned to him to rework their patterns and decorations, creating a genuine artistic current that for at least a decade distinguished German-made porcelain from that of other countries.
The service is in overall excellent condition and consists of:
8 flat plates
8 dinner plates
8 appetizer plates
1 tureen
1 round serving tray
1 gravy boat
Rare object, that tells, on one plate, all the stories of postmodern design.
