Large Byzantine carved marble cross depicting a stylised standing figure of Christ in relief. The figure is shown frontally with outstretched arms aligned with the cross-arms, wearing a long tunic decorated with incised linear and geometric details. The head is framed by a halo-like outline, and facial features are rendered in a simplified, linear manner typical of Byzantine devotional carving.
The lower section forms a short integral base, suggesting the piece may have been intended for private devotional use, possibly as a small altar cross or architectural element. The carving displays characteristic Byzantine stylisation, emphasising symbolic presence over naturalistic detail.
Height: ± 96,5 mm maximum
Width: ± 80,9 mm
Condition: intact condition, with minor abrasions and surface wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
Byzantine devotional objects frequently depicted Christ in a frontal, hieratic pose, reflecting theological emphasis on divine authority and sacred presence. Small carved crosses such as this were used in both ecclesiastical and domestic religious contexts.
The stylised treatment of the figure, elongated proportions and incised decorative elements are characteristic of Middle Byzantine artistic tradition.
