Description from the seller
Russian brass icon The Transfiguration of Christ, 19th century
Beautiful Russian brass icon with multicolored enamel, depicting the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, an important feast within the Orthodox liturgical calendar.
Description
This square icon shows Christ at the center, standing in a radiant mandorla with powerful beams of light emanating from Him. His posture is frontal and exalted, emphasizing His divine nature. On either side stand the prophets Moses and Elijah, recognizable as witnesses to this theophany. At the bottom of the composition are the three apostles Peter, James and John depicted. They lie or kneel in awe and astonishment, turned away from the blinding divine light. This dynamic portrayal of the apostles forms a strong contrast with the serene and vertical figure of Christ.
The background is executed in blue, white and green enamel, suggesting the heavenly and landscape setting. The relief is refined with clear contour lines and carefully modeled figures. At the top there is an integrated hanging eye, indicating use as a home icon or travel icon. Such enameled brass icons were produced in Russia in the 19th century for private devotion. They served as a tangible expression of faith and as protection in daily life.
Period: 19th century
Material: Brass with enamel
Origin: Russia
Condition
In good condition with appropriate signs of aging and use. The enamel shows light wear and small irregularities, consistent with the age. The brass has a warm natural patina. See photos for your own impression.
