Description from the seller
Late 19th century Victorian folding travel comb in solid silver (acid tested), dating to approximately 1880–1900.
During the Victorian era, personal grooming accessories were not merely functional objects but expressions of refinement and social status. Finely engraved silver vanity items such as this were carried during travel and formed part of a gentleman’s or lady’s personal toilette set.
The silver casing is richly decorated with hand-engraved scrolling acanthus and foliate motifs in high Victorian style. The engraving is detailed and well preserved, reflecting the craftsmanship typical of continental European silverwork of the period.
The interior comb appears to be celluloid / early plastic, a material widely used in the late 19th century as a durable alternative to tortoiseshell or horn. The folding mechanism operates correctly and the comb is complete.
Weight: 29.33 grams
Period: circa 1880–1900
Origin: Europe
Condition: Good antique condition with normal age-related wear. Engraving remains clear. No visible structural damage to the silver casing. Comb teeth intact.
A refined and historically characteristic example of a Victorian personal accessory, combining decorative artistry with practical design.
