This magnificent mask is an artwork of the Lega people, from the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lega are renowned for their rich artistic tradition, notably the creation of carved wooden masks and figures used in initiation rites and coming-of-age ceremonies, symbolizing wisdom, authority, and moral values within society.

This wooden mask is distinguished by its expressive, stylized forms, with clean lines and a natural patina that reveal its age and authenticity. The facial features, often simplified and geometric, are characteristic of Lega masks and serve to convey symbolic messages to initiates.
