Description from the seller
Depero and musical theatre
Edited by Daniela Fonti and Claudia Terenzi
Fortunato Depero is certainly one of the most versatile, eclectic, joyful personalities of the futurist movement who, more than any other, managed to fuse art with the everyday aspect of life through a multiform, brilliant imagination. With the Manifesto of the Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe, he theorized in 1915, together with Balla, the need to expand that creativity so unconventional, dynamic, plastic, vibrant, simultaneous, typical of futurist poetry: "We futurists, Balla and Depero, want to realize this total fusion to reconstruct the universe by making it joyful, that is, by re-creating it totally." The catalog presents in particular Depero’s activity in the field of musical theatre and his relations with Rome between 1914 and the early 1920s, through paintings, drawings, sketches, sculptures, photographs, autograph documents. The volume, while illustrating one of the facets of the artist’s multiform activity, reveals his playful character, his originality, his idea of theatre, the principle of plastic dynamism so evident in his dancer figures, in the ironic play of characterizing the figures, in the creation of puppets, in the sometimes mechanical figurations, almost in a synthesis of abstract constructive, sometimes fairy-tale, surreal. A synthesis, therefore, of naturalist and abstract inspiration at the same time, with a concept of theatricality in which plasticity, dynamism, color, sound suggestions merge.
