Description from the seller

Buddha
Eastern Burma, Shan State, Konbaung period
Ethnic work
19th century
Bronze

The work is linked to the production of Eastern Burma, in the tradition of the Shan States, around the early 19th century. The face with soft features, slightly elongated, with a discreet smile and half-closed eyelids, shows affinities with Tai-Shan aesthetics, distinct from the strictly Mandalay canon. The hair in tight small curls covering the ushnisha, the elongated ears, and the continuous line of the brows contribute to this regional typology.

The monastic drapery, clinging to the body with a decorative incised edge on the shoulder, as well as the supple modeling of the torso and arms, attest to artisanal work characteristic of Shan workshops, often influenced by central Burmese styles while preserving local particularisms.

Condition: General wear consistent with age and ritual use, old patina, superficial oxidations, the top of the head is open, revealing the internal cavity of the lost-wax process. Small knocks and losses to the base, stable structure.

Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
