African queen statue / fetish made of wood from the Baoulé people of Ivory Coast.
Collected in the Bouaké region in Ivory Coast -
Statue depicting a queen. Fetish "waka-sona" (a wooden being in Baoulé) representing a queen.
Very beautiful statue with a face full of serenity, a gentle expression, well proportioned, and a finely braided hairstyle.
Small desiccation crack on the right side of the base, see photo.
The Baoulés are one of the largest ethnic groups in Ivory Coast. Their name translates their origin: according to a legend, Queen Aba Pokou led her people on an exodus to the gold-mining regions during the 18th century; she had to sacrifice her son to the god of a river in order to cross it. The people then called themselves the "Bauli," meaning: "the son is dead."
Baoulé artists produced numerous works of art. They created pieces that are among the most elegant African objects.
