Description from the seller
Shipment only to Europe!
Rare!
Brahmin
Gandhara region (present-day Pakistan / Afghanistan)
3rd–5th century CE
Schist relief
Dimensions: 15 × 11 × 3 cm
Small schist relief depicting a bearded male figure, kneeling in an architectural niche, in a posture of reverence before a cult object. The figure holds in the left hand a kamandalu (ritual gourde), a characteristic attribute of Brahmins and ascetics. The naturalistic treatment of the face, the incised beard, and the folds of the garment testify to the Greco-Buddhist aesthetics of Gandharan art.
The scene was likely part of a broader narrative apparatus, possibly related to an episode from the life of the Buddha or to a depiction of a donor.
Condition:
Surface wear, erosion of details and small chips on the edges. The relief is legible with a coherent antique patina.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
Shipped with UPS and insured
