Description from the seller
This set of traditional Japanese mustard seed dolls, handcrafted by a Japanese artisan, is a folk craft from the mid-Showa period. Made by artisans in the Tohoku region of Japan, it features distinct characteristics of traditional folk toys. The set is primarily made of natural solid wood, with the tallest doll approximately 20cm, the medium-sized approximately 14cm, and the shortest approximately 12cm; the diameter is approximately 4–5cm.
Each doll's design incorporates local natural elements. The heads feature simplified lines outlining the facial features, with serene expressions, consistent with traditional Japanese aesthetics. The heads and bodies are connected by wooden pivots, a common feature of this type of toy at the time.
This set retains the original handcrafted marks, with slight signs of age on the surface, including minor fading of the paint and natural cracks in the bark—genuine marks of time. It is sold without its original box.
