Mantel clock and packaging, ebony wood / maple veneer / glass / metal / mechanical components, designed by Michael Graves, USA, 1986, produced by Alessi, Italy, 1988. Mantel clock consisting of a maple-veneered base that supports four ebony columns and a maple-veneered cube, which contains the clock dial. The cube is engraved with horizontal lines and is topped by a simple maple-veneered and ebony front piece. GRAVES FOR ALESSI
The American architect and designer Michael Graves (born 1934, Indianapolis, USA), developed this "Mantel Clock" in 1986 for the leading Italian design company Alessi. Launched in 1988, it was acclaimed for its postmodern interpretation of classic design, with four ebony columns in a Tuscan style supporting a square front and the clock dial.
Graves commented on the project in 1988: 'When designing the table clock, I was interested in exploring the established tradition of seeing artifacts as miniature architectures. There are countless examples where furniture and objects sit in interiors as idealized items that draw their primary cues from proportioned architectural systems. I have always been interested in the ambiguity that arises between these hints of 'interior buildings' and their external precedents.' (Alessi: the Design Factory, Academic Press, 1998, p93)
It is shipped with specially careful packaging included in the shipping cost.
