On November 4, 1966 the Arno overflowed. It was the worst flood since 1557. Many people lost their lives and many art treasures, ancient manuscripts and Florence's monuments were lost. More than forty years later, restoration and conservation work still continue. In Montelupo Fiorentino Fratelli Fanciullacci was seriously affected. More than a thousand priceless molds, many dating from the company's founding in 1911, were lost. The ovens were destroyed, the stock of raw clay was completely depleted, as well as the stock of finished products destined for export to the U.S. The company halted operations for more than a year, and without work many of the most talented artists and craftsmen left the region to find work and a new home for their families. Part of the production was moved to a temporary factory in Florence, while the Montelupo facility was renovated. Production and quality in Montelupo fell dramatically after 1966, and this year is regarded by collectors as the last year in which Fanciullacci ceramics were worth collecting. Fratelli Fanciullacci made a brave effort to recover, but it never again managed to rekindle that spark of artistic genius that had made the company shine in the first half of the twentieth century.
Fratelli Fanciullacci ceased all activities in 1988.
