Description from the seller
Rare French faience jug (later cut-down to vase), 18th century
Rare 18th century French faience vessel, originally made as a small jug and later adapted to a vase. The piece is finely wheel-thrown and decorated in blue and yellow on a white ground with lively figural scenes, floral elements and stylised landscape motifs. The decoration and palette are characteristic of French faience production of the 18th century, influenced by Chinese porcelain designs and chinoiserie themes popular in France during this period.
The painterly style is expressive and dynamic, with confident brushwork and good colour contrast. The vessel shows attractive age-related wear consistent with genuine 18th century faience. The cut-down rim indicates that this piece originally functioned as a jug; this historical alteration is old and does not detract from the decorative or collector’s value of the object.
The base shows typical kiln wear and firing marks consistent with 18th century French faience production.
Origin: France
Period: 18th century
Material: Faience
Height: 16 cm
Width: approx. 13 cm
Condition: good antique condition with age-related wear; old alteration to the rim; no modern restoration observed
This is a rare and characterful example of French faience, highly decorative and suitable for collectors of early European ceramics and museum-style collections.
