Description from the seller
Rare lantern from a wrought-iron ship, with three rings, internally supported by a Cardan suspension.
This example is rare because it has a three-axle structure, meaning it can rotate on three axes and keep the flame vertical as the ship rolls on the waves.
Beautiful original patina. In excellent condition.
Functional, just use oil.
DIAMETER: 21 cm
Fire was the most dangerous thing to have aboard a ship, but it was necessary for illumination. Whale oil was the preferred fuel for lamps on ships. If tilted, as ships do, the lamps could go out or, worse, cause a fire. This Cardan-suspension lamp could rotate with the ship’s roll, mounted by rods to its external support, which in turn was hung from the ceiling.
