Description from the seller
Church oak chair from estate sale of Maastricht Basilica – ca. 1875–1900 – with old harness leather
Description
Heavy, solid oak church chairs, late 19th century (ca. 1875–1900).
According to family tradition, this chair originates from an estate sale of a basilica in Maastricht. The previous owner reportedly acquired them directly at that sale. Written documentation is lacking, but the provenance has always been transmitted within the family.
The chair has a sober but powerful ecclesiastical character and, in terms of construction and style, fits with furniture from chapter rooms, sacristies, or meeting rooms of church institutions from the fin‑de‑siècle.
Construction & Dating
Solid oak
Traditional mortise-and-tenon joints
Reinforced with wooden dowels (no modern screw construction)
Hand-turned rails
Neo-Renaissance influences
The construction and design point to late 19th‑century manufacture (circa 1875–1900).
Upholstery
The chair is upholstered with tautly stretched old harness leather with a beautiful natural patina and signs of use.
No spring layer, but traditional direct upholstery on a wooden seat.
On the basis of nail marks under the seat it is visible that the chairs were reupholstered at least once in the past, which fits with long church use.
The current leather is old (likely early–mid 20th century) and shows an authentic, well-worn appearance.
Condition
Structure stable and solid
Normal signs of aging and use
Beautiful patina on wood and leather
No modern restorations visible
Conclusion
A characterful set of ecclesiastical chairs with a convincing historical appearance and provenance from a Maastricht basilica (tradition). Supposedly purchased from an estate sale of the Maastricht Basilica.
Highly suitable as statement pieces in classical or eclectic interiors, or within a religious/church context.
