Antique wall centerpiece, late 19th century (c. 1880–1900), crafted in silver-plated copper in a Historical Eclecticism style.
Description from the seller
Monumental Wall or Centerpiece Tray - Historical Battle Scene
-Origin: Europe.
-Style: Historical Eclecticism. The artisan blends 17th-century uniformity (horsemen) with figures seemingly lifted from the iconography of the 16th-century Tercios (foot soldier), a common feature in late 19th-century European decorative art used to evoke a glorious past/ Historical, combining elements of the late Renaissance and Baroque in a single narrative composition/Neo-Baroque
-Period: Late 19th century (approx. 1880-1900).
-Material: Silver-plated copper.
-Technique: High-definition hand-embossing and chiseling. Hand-embossing with point-cutting for textures and pronounced relief on the main figures to create a three-dimensional effect.
-Dimensions:
*Total: 46 cm x 32.8 cm.
*Center scene: 36 cm x 22.5 cm.
-Hallmark: No visible maker's marks.
-Condition: Very good structural condition. It has a natural black patina on the back that has been removed in small areas, attesting to the piece's age and the natural oxidation of the metal.
-Versatility: Originally designed as a large-format centerpiece, it also has two rings on the back that allow it to be displayed vertically as a ceiling or wall decoration.
-Ornamentation and Image Interpretation
*The piece presents a rich visual narrative framed by a Rocaille-style border, decorated with symmetrical scrolls and large acanthus leaves that lend it a stately air.
*The central scene depicts a "Council of War during a Siege":
*The Supreme Command: On the left, a monarch, wearing a rapier at his belt, rides a horse rearing up, a symbol of authority.
*The Artillery: Behind the King, a large-caliber field cannon mounted on its carriage is clearly visible, indicating that the scene takes place in a siege or defensive position.
*The Escort and Messengers: On the right, a patrol of horsemen in French-style attire (17th-18th centuries) reports to the command.
*Historical Detail: The figure of a foot soldier stands out alongside the horsemen. His clothing (doublet and breeches) evokes the aesthetics of 16th-century infantry, possibly inspired by the iconography of the Tercios or militias of Navarre.
-This piece is an exceptional find for collectors of militaria, lovers of European history, or as a central element in a high-end classic decoration.
