AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Circa 1900, 23x27 cm.
"Habitants de Biskra", a very beautiful portrait attributed to Alexandre Bougault (19th century).
A very fine vintage gelatin-silver print on laid paper, in very good condition, free (not mounted, rare), and with excellent preservation of contrasts, grayscale tones and levels of detail.
Slight selenium-toning (warm tones).

Having settled in Biskra at the end of the 19th century, Alexandre Bougault opened a studio there in the heart of an oasis then very frequented by European travelers. He develops a local production mixing portraits, religious figures and scenes of daily life.
His photographs are distinguished by restrained cadrages, soft light and meticulous attention to faces, fabrics and textures, giving his subjects an embodied intensity.

A small item of interest for a conservatory collection, not to be missed.

Will be shipped with its sleeve and its neutral pH cardboard support (ideal for a collection kept in good condition).
