Description from the seller

Maya Devi standing in a dancing posture
Context - Second half of the 20th century
Himalaya (Tibet/Nepal)
Golden bronze, turquoise inlays and polychrome highlights
Height 21 cm

Representation of Maya Devi, mother of the Buddha Shakyamuni, depicted standing in a gracefully arched posture reminiscent of the tribhanga. One arm is raised above the head, the other presented in a protective gesture, evoking the iconography associated with the Buddha’s birth. The slender silhouette rests on a circular base decorated with stylized petals.

The face, with fine, regular features, expresses gentleness and serenity. The eyes are outlined with pigments, the hair treated in blue and topped with a crown adorned with turquoise inlays. The jewelry — necklaces, earrings, bracelets and belt — is richly detailed. The garment, finely incised with floral scrolls, contrasts with the bright gilding of the torso. Traces of red and blue polychromy remain, notably at the back of the hairstyle.

The ensemble sits within the tradition of Himalayan bronzes of Tibetan-Nepalese inspiration from the 20th century, combining gilding, decorative chasing, and inlays.

Condition:
Very good overall condition. Minor wear. Small losses of polychromy. Inlays present.

Provenance:
Kanaka The Collection
