La vache qui rit is a soft French cheese originally, but the cheese is now made and eaten all over the world. In most countries the cheese has the same name, but in the local language. In the Netherlands and Flanders the cheese keeps the French name. It is a spreadable cheese, based on a recipe from 1921. That was the recipe for a soft long-lasting cheese. The cheese is a brand of Le Groupe Bel.

The laughing red cow with cheese boxes as earrings has adorned the packaging almost since the beginning. Just like on the Droste packaging, the image, in this case a smiling cow, recurs recursively.
