Description from the seller
Pair of silver liturgical oil/holy oil boxes – 19th century – France
Set consisting of two solid silver liturgical ampoules intended to contain the holy oils used in Catholic sacraments (anointing of the sick, baptism, confirmation, ordination).
Each ampoule is engraved:
• O.S → Oleum Sanctum (oil of the catechumens or holy oil)
• S.C → Sanctum Crisma (holy chrism)
The lids are topped with a raised Latin cross, inset, with a hammered decorative pattern in the recessed areas.
Elegant, sober finish typical of 19th-century liturgical goldsmithing.
The two boxes are joined by a central hinge, an original system enabling practical liturgical transport.
Gold-on-fire interior (vermeil) to protect the consecrated oils – gilding still clearly visible.
Presented in their original antique case, black bound, blue velvet lining.
Latching mechanism in brass, functional.
Very good overall condition for the age.
Normal signs of former liturgical use: micro-scratches, patina, small marks visible in photos.
Solid hinge, functioning lids.
Antique case with wear consistent with age (frayed corners, marked velvet).
The photos are an integral part of the description and complement the presentation. They allow you to appraise the condition and features. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
