Lisette Model conceived photography as work, not as a mission. She turned New York City, the American Dream, and its dispossessed into the object of her sharp, clean gaze. Her way of subjugating the medium and technique to her point of view is one of her defining traits, while her dual career as creator and teacher marked an entire generation of young photographers. "Shoot from the gut," Model always used to say.
