Description from the seller

Mfondo Mask – Lwalwa – Democratic Republic of the Congo

A radical sculpture, straddling the boundary between rite and modern avant-garde

This Mfondo mask from the Lwalwa corpus asserts itself with facial architecture of rare power. The face is reduced to essential volumes, almost sharp, organized around a dominant vertical axis. The prominent nose, hollowed and angular eyes, the strongly carved mouth compose a geometric construction with great formal tension. This extreme stylization, deliberately stripped, makes an unambiguous reference to the explorations of Cubism and the European avant-gardes of the early 20th century, just as these forms nourished and inspired generations of modern artists. Here, abstraction is never gratuitous: it expresses a worldview, a ritual language, a presence. The ancient patina, marked by use and time, further enhances the expressive charge of the work. A mask of character, demanding, emblematic of these foundational pieces that helped to disrupt the history of Western art.
