Description from the seller
Statue of Hogon – Dogon – Mali
Rare and beautiful statue representing a Hogon, the central and highly respected figure of Dogon society, custodian of cosmological, religious and social knowledge. The sculpture is distinguished by an elongated silhouette and perfectly balanced form, resting on a circular base, affirming a calm and hieratic presence. The body is treated with great formal sobriety, with the arms along the torso, the hands naturally descending toward the thighs, conveying an attitude of restraint and silent authority.
The head, slightly inclined, is borne by a long cylindrical neck, a characteristic element of Dogon aesthetics, reinforcing the impression of spiritual elevation. The face with its pure features, half-closed eyelids and discreet mouth emits an expression of inner concentration and wisdom. The volumes are controlled, without excess, giving full space to the strength of the form and to the architectural reading of the piece.
The patina is old, deep and homogeneous, marked by warm to dark brown nuances, with subtle wear on the reliefs, testifying to prolonged ritual use. This type of sculpture was associated with ancestor worship, the transmission of knowledge and the mediation between the world of men and that of invisible forces. A work of great dignity, rare for its balance and presence, fully embodying the spiritual and intellectual power of the Hogon.
