Description from the seller
Napoleon III Original Center Table with Geometric Inlays and Gilded Bronzes
Splendid specimen of high French cabinetmaking from the mid-19th century, this Napoleon III period occasional table perfectly embodies the eclectic and extravagant taste of the Second Empire. The furniture stands out for an aesthetic research based on formal perfection, where architectural lines harmonize with a rich yet rigorous decoration. The structure is entirely embellished with a sophisticated geometric inlay in precious woods, such as ebony, rosewood, and rosewood (palissandro), creating lozenge or cube patterns with great depth of perspective, typical of the most prestigious commissions of the era.
The decorative apparatus in gilded and mercury-chiselled bronze is of the highest quality and serves as a structural frame to the entire piece. Along the edges of the top and on the profiles of the drawers run elegant bronze moldings that emphasize its shape, while the uprights are enriched with Classical motif friezes, swags, and exquisite mascarons. The contrast between the geometric rigor of the inlays and the softness of the gilded bronzes creates a visually rare balance of elegance, elevating the piece to a collectible work of art.
The legs, either slender or tapered depending on the structure, terminate with bronze sabot finely chiselled, ensuring swiftness and solidity. The antique provenance and the complexity of the geometric inlays make this coffee table a furnishings element of great historical value, ideal for enriching high-status environments or to be exhibited as a focal piece in a noble salon, bringing with it the all the charm of Imperial Paris.
