Rare and powerful majolica fragment depicting Ecce Homo, Christ crowned with thorns. The fragment shows an exceptionally expressive and deeply human portrayal of Christ: the slightly lowered gaze, subtle asymmetry of the eyes and the softly modelled mouth give the face a restrained, almost tangible emotional presence. This type of devotional image was intended to evoke direct empathy and contemplation in the viewer.

Stylistically, this work closely relates to Italian majolica production of the second half of the 16th century, associated with centres such as Faenza, Urbino and Castel Durante. The warm ochre and honey tones, combined with strong manganese brown and coppery green in the crown of thorns, are characteristic of this period. The loose, painterly brushwork in the hair and beard suggests an experienced workshop hand.

This is a fragment of a larger devotional plaque or wall tile, likely originating from a religious or private devotional context (chapel, monastery interior or domestic altar).

Condition
In good/fair and honest condition, with visible traces of age and use: edge losses, small glaze chips and surface wear consistent with a 16th-century object. No restorations observed. The fragment retains a beautiful, authentic patina.
