Description from the seller

Vase Scailmont signed Georgette Japonisant Art Deco

Elegant antique vase from the Scailmont Glassworks (Manage, Belgium) dating from the 1920s, a transitional period between Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

The piece is made of satin glass and hand-decorated with a finely enamelled naturalistic scene depicting a bird observing an insect amid flowering foliage. This delicate composition sits within the japonisant decorative tradition that strongly influenced European decorative arts at the beginning of the 20th century.

The profile drawing of the bird, perched on a diagonal branch, directly recalls Japanese prints and naturalist illustrations that inspired many Belgian glass workshops.

The vase features a glossy black neck adorned with small white dots and a gold ring, an elegant contrast with the softness of the satin glass.

The piece is signed “Scailmont” as well as “Georgette,” most probably the decorator who executed the hand-painted decoration in the glassworks' workshop.
An ornamental object typical of the artistic production of the Scailmont Glassworks in Manage, today sought after by collectors of Belgian glass and early 20th-century decorative arts.
