Description from the seller

Very beautiful figurative axe "nsésu" of the Pende people
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Handle length: 42 cm
Max width: 27 cm
Period: early 20th century
Provenance: Galerie Art Classique - Belgium

Axes of this type were official insignia for men such as professional sculptors, chiefs and priests. Worn over the shoulder and held with one hand, they were used to emphasize the particular status of their owner (Elsen, De Fer et De fierté, 2003; Roberts, Joyce and Berns (eds.), Striking Iron: The Art of African Blacksmiths, 2019; Westerdijk, African Metal Implements, 1984).

Superb axe adorned with a mask and two small horns at the back of the handle. The tiger-striped blade characteristic of the Congo. Excellent provenance.

Handle and blade are slightly cracked. See photographs.
