AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Stunning "wara" Mbugbu shield
(no handle! - the practice of removing handles to hang them better on the wall has unfortunately degraded many shields)
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Total height: 120 cm
Maximum width: 40 cm
Materials: wood, basketry, leather (one leather strap remains)
Provenance: Danny De Waele - Belgium (dannytribalart)

The standard equipment of Ngbandi, Sango, Yakoma and Mbugbu warriors consisted of long oval shields braided from dense rattan mesh, with wooden grip panels on the back. These ethnic groups live in the border area between southern Central African Republic and northern Democratic Republic of Congo. Called vara or wola, these shields typically feature a variety of symmetrical patterns with a high contrast between light and dark (Felix, Low and Lu (eds.), Fatal Beauty: Traditional Weapons from Central Africa, 2013

The latest photograph shows a similar Mbugbu shield in the book "Fatal Beauty" (1993 edition)
