Plate “The Clermont. Baltimore. 1801”
Exceptional British colonial campaign desk in mahogany, made in the early 20th century. Plate “The Clermont. Baltimore. 1801”.
The British Empire reached its zenith between the 19th and 20th centuries, spanning territories in Africa, India, Asia, the South Pacific and North America, exposing colonizers to a wide range of design influences in furniture. Hence, British colonial furniture fuses classical English elegance (Georgian and Victorian styles) with exotic materials and the functionality needed for tropical climates. It is characterized by solid dark woods (teak, mahogany, ebony), use of rattan, bamboo and leather, with sturdy yet streamlined designs.
Much of it was specifically designed to be transformed into mobile, travel-ready pieces, known as “campaign furniture” typical of the era, influenced by the culture and climate of places where the British settled as they were sent across the empire to attend to colonial affairs. They carried their traditional decorative and furnishing pieces, which eventually mingled with local materials and styles.
These are the features we find in this spectacular desk, conceived as a robust, functional piece, yet visually refined. The warm mahogany veneer is highlighted by the gilt-brass fittings, carefully arranged. Flip-down writing surface with embossed leather panels on small storage compartments, removable trays… In addition to the large compartments or drawers arranged along the rest of the front of the piece.
This style, synonymous with elegance, is already considered a classic. Its history is felt in every detail, adding character and presence to any space.
The shipment of the product will be paid by the buyer according to the dimensions, weight and destination. Shipping costs include professional custom-made packaging; and personalized shipping, with tracking number and warranty. DUE TO THE PIECE’S DIMENSIONS, IT IS PREFERRED TO ARRANGE SHIPPING WITH THE BUYER. CURRENT COSTS ARE ESTIMATES.
The buyer will be responsible for paying import duties and associated taxes in the destination country, if any. Please note the seller’s liability disclaimer regarding possible customs charges, as they are charged in the destination country and the amount to pay is determined by the customs authority of that country. If an export permit is required, the costs are borne by the buyer. The cost varies progressively with the value of the work to be exported.
