Description from the seller
Jugendstil Hand-Carved Wooden Newspaper / Magazine Rack, ca. 1900
In excellent condition – No reserve.
Beautifully hand-carved Jugendstil newspaper and magazine rack, dating from the early 20th century (circa 1890–1910). Executed in solid dark tropical hardwood, richly decorated with geometric borders, rosettes, and fan-shaped relief carving typical of late Jugendstil / early Art Nouveau design.
This type of decorative household item was produced for the European market, often in colonial workshops in Southeast Asia for Dutch and German interiors. The deeply carved ornamental panels and symmetrical composition reflect the Jugendstil fascination with craftsmanship, material quality, and refined surface decoration.
A highly decorative and functional wall piece, featuring the original carved inscription “COURANTEN.” (Dutch for newspapers).
