Description from the seller

Saint John the Baptist with his head inclined and a sad expression.

He holds a cup or plate in which his own decapitated head appears.

In the other hand he usually carries a scroll or prophetic book.

The golden background represents the divine or celestial world.

This image unites two moments of his life:

The prophet who proclaims Christ (that is why the scroll).

His martyrdom, when he was beheaded by order of Herod Antipas, at the request of Salome (episode recounted in the Gospel).

Symbolic meaning

The cup with the head has a theological sense:

Represents his martyrdom.

It is interpreted as Eucharistic prefiguration (like a chalice).

Indicates that John is the first martyr of the New Testament.

Russian or Eastern icon

Egg tempera on panel

Gold background

Probably 18th–19th century

Interesting details of your icon

The text on the scroll is in Church Slavonic.

The face is painted with the dark shading typical of Russian icons.
