Description from the seller
The Iginga statues of the Lega: Initiatory knowledge and moral balance
Among the Lega of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Iginga statues occupy a central place in the Bwami initiation society’s rituals. Sculpted in wood, often small in size and lacking realistic detail, these figures embody moral precepts and secret knowledge passed down to initiates.
Unlike cult objects, the Iginga are pedagogical supports: each statue represents a value (wisdom, justice, courage) or a stage of initiation. Their minimalist form, sometimes asymmetrical, reflects the idea that truth gradually reveals itself. Placed on altars or handled during ceremonies, they remind us that knowledge is a path toward individual and collective balance.
These works reveal a philosophy in which art and ethics unite to guide the individual toward spiritual maturity.
