Chinese Porcelain Sculpture – Happy Buddha (Budai) with Children – 20th Century
Charming porcelain sculpture depicting Budai, the Happy Buddha, surrounded by several children. In Chinese tradition, Budai symbolizes prosperity, abundance, joy, and good fortune, and is a beloved figure in both decorative art and cultural symbolism. The children around him represent happiness, vitality, and family prosperity.
The piece features rich hand-painted polychrome decoration, with delicate details on the garments and ornamental patterns in blue, red, green, and soft tones. Budai’s joyful expression together with the playful interaction of the children creates a lively and harmonious composition typical of traditional representations of this figure.
On the base there is a square seal mark with Chinese characters in relief, a characteristic commonly found on Chinese decorative porcelain pieces produced during the 20th century, often intended for export.
